Couple that with casually charming, similarly gentle voice acting for its three playable characters and you've got something that's positively oozing goodwill. In this grimdark age, we don't see a lot of games that try to make us feel sweet and cheerful, and as such Trine 2's happy face sticks out a mile.

I don't get the sense it's especially high-tech, just that it enjoys particularly loving art direction. I've put a little time into the beta version - not enough for some sort of cast-iron verdict, but enough to go 'd'aMostly because of the lighting, which is all softly-coloured rays illuminating the chunky, almost plasticine people in a way that makes me think of the covers to early Terry Pratchett books. I was still feeling a little raw after the freneticism of Serious Sam 3 and an unfortunate chilli-burn incident that temporarily cost me the use of my hands, but Trine 2's main menu alone is a balm for the soul if ever there was one. Otherwise a very solid game.FrozenByte's ethereally-lit follow-up to their Lost Vikings-esque puzzle-platformer has been sitting temptingly on my hard drive for several weeks now, but my Skyrim habit has kept me from until today. Fatigue set and made the last 3rd more of a slog to get through. In the DLC's defense, a lot of the level design was significantly more interesting in the DLC levels than in some of the original levels but the puzzles were almost exactly the same. I felt satisfied when I had beaten the final boss and the credits began to roll but then the DLC started and it turned out I was only 2/3rds of the way through the game. My biggest problem with the game (aside from a little glitchyness, here and there) is that the game is repetitive and goes on to long. The actual narrative of the story is very thin and feels a bit lazy. The levels are visually stunning and the obstacles are varied enough to keep things mostly interesting. The levels are visually stunning Where this game really excels is in the number and variety of ways the player is given to solve each puzzle. If you are even remotely considering this game, do not wait for one more second. The character models look amazing, the physics are top notch, and the music draws you right into it's fantasy world. Last night she was like "Oh my god, what is this game? It's absolutely beautiful!" And I have not even touched on the gameplay yet which is addictively fun. But she has never stopped to look at a game ever. Now she has seen bits and pieces of every game that I have played in the past 10 years just from walking through the room while I have been playing and glancing at the screen. My wife, who cares 0.0% about video games, was sitting in the room with me last night while I was playing. You honestly cannot see everything because there is just too much. I found myself always wanting to journey INTO the scenes, instead of just ACROSS the scenes because of the amount of depth and detail in the background. The depth of the backgrounds is incredible and there is constantly something going on in the background at all times. Even though it's a 2d side scroller, it must be rendered in 3d. I am constantly stopping just to look around and try to see all that there is to see. And the amount of sheer detail in these environments is just mindblowing. The colors are so unique and vivid that it just comes to life off of your screen. It looks like you are looking at some kind of wonderful live painting.

The lighting and visuals are absolutely breathtaking. In my 30+ years of gaming, this is hands down the most beautifully stunning game that I have ever seen. It looked interesting so I figured that I would give it a try.
